I fell for the one about an old, impoverished looking couple who came to create an endowment in their son’s (alumnus) name at Harvard University. They were ignored and turned away. Both of the were wealthy millionaires and went on to start Stanford University. It made a convincing read and I’ve heard many motivational speakers using this incident in their speeches. However, both Stanford and Harvard have denied the story and put an end to this fairy tale .
