Cheriyal Scroll Paintings -National Awardee D VAIKUNTAM NAKASH

National awardee D VAIKUNTAM NAKASH working on the GI tagged Cheriyal paintings from his home in Uppal,Hyderabad.

Cheriyal scroll paintings practised by the Nakashi community in Cheriyal village in Warangal district of Telangana almost became extinct during his grandfather Mr Venkataramaiah’s time as each scroll painting would last for years precluding repeat orders.

And travelling storytellers, his main customers  also dwindled.

He was about to give up when he secured a major order for scroll paintings but was paralysed.

Undeterred, he decided to teach his son and grandson and they not only learnt the art but are keeping it alive by passing it on to the next generation, Rakesh and Vinay, both sons of Mr Vaikuntam.

A visit to his home in Hyderabad finds his entire family involved in the art.

Cheriyal paintings use natural colours and make an excellent gift.

You can now order online direct with him or buy from Lepakshi showrooms in Telangana and AP.
