When I was in Darjeeling two weeks ago,the friendly hotel front desk gave me a laundry list of ‘must see’ places.
But I was keen on only two: Sighting Kanchenjunga and a joyride on the toy train of the iconic Darjeeling Hill Railway.
Accomplished both with the customary stroll around the Mall area.
I took a joyride from Darjeeling to Ghoom station about 7 kms away. The charges are Rs 1300.00 for a two hour round trip., the toy train is hauled by a steam loco to bring back the charms of a different era. Being the son of a railway officer I enjoyed this thoroughly.
In between there are two stops. The first, a five minute watering stop and then a ten minute stop at Bastia Loop from where you get a panoramic view of Darjeeling.
The heritage train trip is worth every rupee spent. To know more about its history, please visit
